CANNY QUEEN CUTS ROYAL BILLS BY GROWING HER OWN FRUIT AND FLOWERS AT BALMORAL

THE Queen has ordered fruit to be grown at her Scottish estate for the first time to cut costs.

Her Majesty has ordered royal gardeners at Balmoral to plant apples, pears, cherries, apricots, grapes and figs, to save spending money on buying in food.

Ten new varieties of roses are also being planted to provide fresh cut flowers.

A royal estate insider said: “The Queen wants to make savings like everyone else.

“She spends hundreds of pounds buying exotic fruits for the kitchen and a lot more on cut flowers. She’s decided enough is enough and wants to be self-sufficient. A small fruit crop is expected this year from the new indoor fruits, apricots and grapes, and the rest will be picked next year.”

Last month it was revealed the Queen had lost up to £37million on the stock market.

In April, Her Majesty’s private wealth was estimated to be £320million, which included a personal investment portfolio valued at £100million, but experts predicted this has taken an “enormous hit”.

A plea for an extra £1million a year from the taxpayer to help repair her palaces has been rejected by the Government.
