O’boy: airport ‘bomb’ was chocolate milk mix

The suspected bomb which resulted in large sections of Stockholm’s Arlanda airport being blocked off Wednesday turned out to be a package of O’boy chocolate milk mix wrapped in duct tape.

“The bomb technicians shot it up and it contained O’boy,” said Arlanda police commander Jan Sommar to the TT news agency.

O’boy is a popular chocolate drink mix sold in Sweden and other Nordic countries.

Police and bomb technicians were called to Arlanda’s terminal 5, the international terminal, around 9:30am Wednesday after a suspicious object had been discovered near the special baggage check in counter.

A large portion of the terminal was blocked off for several hours, although passenger disruption was minimal.

The incident isn't the first major bomb-scare blunder in Sweden in recent months.

In January, a concerned janitor called police when he noticed a small parcel moving about in an unusual manner. The bomb squad later discovered that the suspicious device was a vibrating sex toy.

And in late May, a can of shaving cream carried by a contractor worker caused a false alarm at the Oskarshamn nuclear plant. Two men were arrested in the case, as officials feared the men were involved in a plot to sabotage the plant.

Both men were released and no charges were filed.

Hampton man tells OPEC to kiss his *&%!

Many people are outraged with the high prices at the pump, but Gary Cooper, a truck driver from Hampton, took a unique stand to express his opinion about fuel prices.

Cooper designed a personalized license plate that expresses his disgust with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

OPEC is a group of oil producing countries that plays a large part in determining the supply of oil. It supplies almost 40 percent of the world's daily oil output.

"I have been thinking about doing something to protest gas prices and I just decided to do it," Cooper said. "I got fed up."

His plate, which reads, "KMA OPEC," tells the intergovernmental organization to kiss his hind parts, and people throughout the Hampton Roads area are giving him thumbs up.

"People are honking the horn, laughing, and throwing thumbs up...I love it," Cooper said.

Cooper said he decided to order his personalized license plate so he could make a broad statement to OPEC and the U.S. government. Ever since he put the tag on his Mini Cooper two weeks ago he has definitely fulfilled his goal.

Cooper said he just wants the government to do something about the gas prices, and he doesn't understand why they just can't dip into the reserves.

"I can't imagine what people who have large trucks are going through," he said. "We have got to do something, people can't keep doing this."

Cooper is determined to continue fighting for what he believes in until he sees some changes taking places. He said if things don't change soon, he will probably get another tag that conveys even more of his sentiments toward the government.

"I have been thinking about what I might get next," he said. "I'll probably get something that says 'Thank God Bush is gone.' "

The secret of how the cold sore virus manages to persist for a lifetime in the human body may have been cracked by US scientists.

The herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) can lie dormant in facial nerves, emerging periodically to cause sores.

A Duke University Medical Center team may have uncovered how it can reactivate itself from a dormant state.

The finding, published in the journal Nature, could eventually lead to new treatments.

When fighting a virus, the immune system relies heavily on the protein chemicals produced by the virus which it uses to help mark it for destruction.

Herpes viruses manage to evade the immune system by shutting down production of these proteins completely, and remaining in this state for long periods before starting to replicate again.

Wake-up call

This is why patients, once infected, have occasional flare-ups of cold sores or genital herpes, and can never get rid of the infection completely.

However, there is one thing that HSV-1 does produce, the precise role of which has puzzled scientists for some years.

It is a type of RNA, a single strand of genetic information copied from the DNA of the virus. In other viruses, these RNAs make proteins that are useful to the virus, but in herpes, this was not the case.

The Duke University team suspected that it somehow helped keep the virus in its dormant state, and studied what happened to these "latent RNAs" in mice.

They found they were broken down into even smaller strands, called microRNAs, and these appeared to block the production of proteins which reactivated the virus.

Effectively, they were helping keep the virus in its dormant state.

Professor Bryan Cullen, who led the research, said: "We have provided a molecular understanding of how HSV-1 hides and then switches back and forth between the latent and active phases."

He said a drug based on blocking these microRNAs could in theory "wake up" all the viruses, making them vulnerable to antiviral therapy, and raising the possibility of a cure for herpes.

Professor Roger Everett, a Medical Research Council virologist based in Glasgow, said that the research represented a step forward in a "long-standing problem" in the field.

The next step, he said would be to see what happened in an animal using a virus engineered to block production of these RNAs.

Can Cars Really Run On Water?

Online sellers will send you the information and/or the parts you need to convert your car to run on water. They claim their systems are easy to install. It’s all perfectly legal, and it almost works. And they claim it only costs $100 to $300.

Conspiracy and Confusion

Conversion kit sellers claim oil companies have tried to keep the water-as-fuel technology a secret. And of course, frustrated drivers are all too ready to believe it.

“Run Your Car On Water” promoters also associate their products with hydrogen fuel cells, which are indeed a bona fide energy source. But the conversion kits are just playing at this technology, and the results are negligible.

The idea that your car “runs on water” is a bit of a misnomer. The conversion kits don’t actually promise to replace gasoline with water. They only claim to make your gasoline engine more efficient.

The system draws electricity produced by your engine and runs it through a jug of water. As you may have learned in high school, an electric current separates water into its two elements: hydrogen and oxygen. Conversion kits don’t do this very effectively, so their sellers claim only that the systems create something called “HHO gas.” That gas is then carried to the engine’s air intake, sucked into the engine and, hopefully, burned.

Trouble is, the amounts of hydrogen and oxygen produced in this process are fairly insignificant. Since gasoline engines aren’t designed to burn anything besides gasoline, spitting other elements into their intakes isn’t entirely proven to help. In fact, it may even have unintended consequences, including corrosion and other potential engine troubles.

Real Answers

The answers to the tough questions about high gas prices aren’t as simple as a gas gimmick. What really got us into this mess, and how tough are the real solutions?

And while you decide whether or not purchasing a conversion kit like this is right for you, try doing the best with what you already have.

1. You’re not alone. High gas prices are democratic. Everybody pays them.
2. Traffic is down, so when you do drive, you’re less likely to be stuck in a jam.
3. Most importantly, after decades of ignoring a serious issue, we’re finally facing the energy shortage head-on. This is bound to lead to solutions. Water conversion kits may not be the answer, but they’re a sign Americans are willing to consider any possibilities when it comes to fuel efficiency.

South Carolina Boy Interested in Law Enforcement Steals Police Cruiser Twice, Mom Sees Nothing Wrong

DILLON, South Carolina — Call him the short arm of the law.

Police in Dillon, a small South Carolina town near the North Carolina border, say a 13-year-old with an interest in law enforcement twice stole a police cruiser and took it out to do some patrolling.

The boy's mother saw him bring the car home both times but didn't see anything wrong with the joyrides, Police Sgt. Jason Turner said.

The boy, who was charged with larceny and second-degree burglary, was not identified because of his age. He remained in Department of Juvenile Justice custody Wednesday.

His mother, Patricia Gillespie, was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She was released on $5,000 bond. A phone listing for her could not be found.

Turner said residents called police Sunday to say they'd seen the boy driving a police car. He said the boy also took the cruiser the previous Sunday and drove it around before returning it to the station. No one noticed it was missing.

The boy apparently watched someone enter a code to get into the department, then used it to get in and take the keys to the cruiser, Turner said.
